Cabinet hardware jigs: getting every handle straight the first time
Fitting handles to one cabinet door is a five-minute job with a tape measure. Fitting them to twenty is a different problem, because the eye notices a handle that is three millimetres out far more readily than it notices one that is ten millimetres from the edge instead of nine.
What consistency actually requires
The visual test people apply to a fitted kitchen is not “is this handle in the right place” but “is this handle in the same place as the one next to it”. Consistency beats absolute accuracy every time.
That is what a jig gives you: not a more accurate hole, but the same hole, twenty times.
How a jig works
A cabinet hardware jig is a plate with a row of pre-drilled bushings, an adjustable fence that registers against the edge of the door, and stops that fix the distance from the top or bottom. You set it once, clamp it to each door in turn, and drill through the bushings.
The bushings are the important part. A bare hole in aluminium wallows within a dozen uses and your last doors drift. Hardened steel bushings hold their size.
Setting up, in order
- Measure the hardware, not the door. Handle centres are typically 96 mm, 128 mm or 160 mm; knobs are a single hole. Set the jig’s hole spacing to the hardware you are actually fitting.
- Decide the convention before you drill anything. Doors usually take handles vertically on the stile, a fixed distance from the top or bottom corner. Drawers take them horizontally, centred. Write your numbers down.
- Set the edge distance. Somewhere between 35 and 50 mm from the edge is normal. What matters is that it is the same everywhere.
- Test on scrap. Always. A piece of the same thickness, drilled and offered up to a handle, takes two minutes and has saved every cabinet maker who has ever done it.
- Clamp, do not hold. The single largest source of error is a jig moving under the drill.
The drilling itself
- Back the door. A sacrificial piece of scrap behind the exit point stops the veneer blowing out. On a door you cannot back, drill from the face until the point breaks through, then finish from the back.
- Bit size matters more than you think. Handle bolts are usually M4, so a 5 mm hole gives a little adjustment; drill 4 mm and every handle has to be perfect.
- Drill straight. The bushing controls this, which is exactly why it is worth having.
- Clear the swarf. Withdraw the bit once or twice through the cut; MDF dust packs and burns.
Mistakes a jig will not save you from
A jig guarantees repeatability. It does not guarantee that your decision was right.
- Handles that foul the worktop or the wall when the door opens. Check the swing before you drill twenty of them.
- Left and right doors treated identically. On a pair of doors, the handles should mirror, not repeat. It is the most common expensive mistake in a kitchen.
- The bolts supplied being too short for a thick door. Check before, not after.
- Drawers of different heights centred individually rather than aligned to each other. Both are defensible; pick one and hold it.
A centre punch is still worth owning
Even with a jig, an automatic centre punch earns its place. Marking the centre before drilling stops the bit walking on a laminated surface, and on the doors where a jig will not fit — an odd corner unit, a filler panel — punch and drill by hand is the fallback.
Order of work for a whole kitchen
- Fit all the doors and drawers first and let them settle for a day.
- Stand back and check alignment across the run. Adjust hinges now, not later.
- Set the jig, test on scrap, drill one door and hang the handle.
- Live with that one door for an hour. Open it, walk past it, look at it from the doorway.
- Then, and only then, drill the other nineteen.
Ask before you buy the jig
If you are fitting handles to four doors, a tape measure and a punch will do. Past about eight, a jig pays for itself in avoided mistakes on the first job. Come and tell us how many doors and what hardware, and we will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.
Drawer fronts, which follow different rules
Doors take handles on the stile, a fixed distance from a corner. Drawer fronts are centred horizontally, and the vertical position depends on the drawer height. On a run of drawers of differing heights you have a choice: centre each one individually, or align them all on a common line measured from the top of each front. Both look deliberate; mixing them looks like a mistake.
For a bank of drawers under a worktop, aligning to a common distance from the top usually reads better, because the eye follows the top edges.
Working with existing holes
Replacing handles on an older kitchen means living with holes that are already there. If the new hardware has the same centres, the job is simple. If it does not, the options are a back plate that covers both sets of holes, filling and redrilling, or choosing hardware to match the existing centres.
Filling holes in a laminated door rarely disappears completely — the filler takes paint differently and the repair shows in raking light. Measure the existing centres before shopping and the problem usually solves itself, because 96 mm and 128 mm cover most of what was fitted in the last thirty years.
Keeping a record
Write your jig settings on a strip of tape stuck inside a cupboard door: edge distance, distance from the top, hole centres, bit size. When a door is damaged in three years and replaced, the new one gets holes in exactly the right place without any measuring at all.
